Around 3:40 p.m., a woman called police to her third-floor apartment in the 900 block of West Cornelia because “a random man” put his hands on her. In a subsequent call, the “random man” was identified by name, so it is not yet clear if the woman and man knew each other.
A neighbor also reported hearing a “young female neighbor” yelling for help with the sounds of screams, glass breaking, and dog barks coming from the woman’s home.
The man put the victim into a headlock, but she was able to escape and call for police, according to a CPD spokesperson. While the victim called for help, the man allegedly tore her apartment apart.
Police arrived moments later as the suspect ran out the back of the woman’s apartment with a butcher knife in his hand. For more than 10 minutes, police officers pursued the man on a winding chase through Wrigleyville side streets.
Several officers were ordered to clear a path for the man so he did not encounter members of the public as he ran while allegedly waving the knife in the air.
Police took the man into custody in the 3400 block of North Seminary after deploying three Tasers and a canister of chemical spray, according to a supervisor on the scene. A knife and a liquor bottle were recovered nearby.
Chicago police tonight confirmed that a man was taken into custody. The woman was not seriously injured.
A police department source said a front window was broken out of the woman’s apartment and the offender left stab marks and bloodstains on drywall in her kitchen.
The man was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment of Taser injuries. Charges are pending. CWBChicago will update this report when more details are confirmed and charges are filed.
Monday’s incident occurred about three blocks from where a Boystown woman was battered and robbed by a home invader on Sunday morning.
