A 27-year-old woman was fatally shot Monday evening by a masked man who knocked on her apartment door in Albany Park, police said. No one is in custody.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Stephanie Brooks of the Austin neighborhood.

Around 9:30 p.m., a male friend of Brooks answered a knock on the door of a second floor apartment in the 4400 block of North Francisco, according to police. The man was confronted by a masked gunman dressed in all black clothing who tried to force his way into the apartment.

When Brooks tried to help her friend close the door, the offender fired shots that struck her in the chest, CPD said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses saw a man running northbound on Francisco after the shooting. He is described as black and about 5’8” tall. He reportedly wore a black hoodie pulled up over his head, a black and white striped mask that covered his face below the eyes, black pants, and gloves.

Brooks is the first person to be fatally shot in Albany Park this year. There have been four other incidents with persons shot since Jan. 1, according to city data. That’s the most shooting incidents during the period since at least 2002.

Area North detectives are investigating.
