A 19-year-old man was shot when he fought back against a would-be robber in the Avondale neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, police said. No one is in custody.

The victim was on the 3200 block of North Drake when the offender walked up, pulled out a handgun, and demanded his valuables around 4:45 p.m., according to police records. A fight broke out between the men and the offender fired a shot, striking the victim in his neck.

Police said the gunman, a Hispanic man wearing a blue hoodie, may have run into an alley between Melrose and School streets.

An ambulance transported the victim to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where his condition stabilized.

Area North detectives are investigating.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
