Two men were shot, one fatally, while riding in a car on Lake Shore Drive near Oak Street Beach overnight, police said. A third person in the car was injured when their vehicle crashed into a light pole on the roadside.
Witnesses began reporting the car crash moments after officers stationed at the intersection of Michigan and Oak reported gunfire around 12:43 a.m. Cops found a silver Nissan Sentra that crashed into a pole while traveling northbound on the 1100 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to a CPD statement.
The 32-year-old male driver, was later pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with two gunshot wounds to his torso. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as German Villalobos.
A 20-year-old male passenger in the car suffered two gunshot wounds to his arm. His condition stabilized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. A 25-year-old male passenger who suffered minor injuries from the crash was listed in good condition at an unidentified hospital.
Police said no one is in in custody for the shooting. It was not clear where the gunfire came from.
CPD surveillance camera operators saw three people run from near the crash scene and cross into the Gold Coast neighborhood, where at least one of them changed clothing. Police later detained two of those individuals, but it’s not clear if they were involved in the shooting. Both of the detainees were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with unspecified injuries.
Area Three detectives are investigating.
