Man detained, woman hospitalized after cops disrupt possible sexual assault in the Loop

A man is in custody after police found him on top of a woman, possibly in the midst of a sexual assault, Friday morning in the Loop, according to preliminary information from Chicago police.

Officers responded to the 300 block of North Lower Michigan to handle a “check the well-being” call around 1 a.m., Officer Alex Aguas said. Police found the man on top of the woman who was lying unconscious on the ground next to an SUV, according to a CPD report. It’s not clear how the woman became unconscious.

Cops detained the man, and an ambulance took the woman to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, Aguas said.

Police have not been able to identify the woman, according to Aguas, who said the case is being investigated as an attempted criminal sexual assault. The classification may change as the investigation unfolds, Aguas said.

Evidence technicians recovered a liquor bottle from the scene.
