Update October 27, 2021: Charges filed.

Police are investigating after a man was fatally shot in the back on a West Town sidewalk early Monday. The victim turned 34-years-old on Sunday.

Patrol officers heard gunfire in the area around 2:35 a.m. and soon found the victim lying dead on a sidewalk in the 1400 block of West Division, just west of the Near North Montessori School.

The victim suffered five gunshot wounds to his back and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police found about nine shell casings.

Witnesses reported seeing a man run north on Greenview moments after they heard gunfire. Before the body was found, officers who heard the gunshots saw a tan or silver minivan speeding from the area. But no arrests have been made.

Area Five detectives are handling the investigation.
