Two gunmen carjack driver at Lakeview gas station, police say

Two armed carjackers took a man’s SUV at gunpoint at a Shell gas station in Lakeview, 3600 North Ashland, early Saturday.

The victim, age 34, was putting air in the tire of his white 2019 Land Rover when four men pulled up in an older red sedan, Officer Ronald Westbrooks said.

Two men got out of the car, one armed with a handgun and the other with a rifle, and ordered him to get on the ground while pointing their weapons at him, according to Westbrooks. They then entered his SUV and drove away. The other two offenders followed the Land Rover south on Ashland in the red sedan, Westbrooks said.

CPD cameras tracked the vehicles to Belmont, where they turned east to Lake Shore Drive, and then headed south.

The victim said the two primary carjackers were Black men who wore masks, hoodies, and dark clothing. Area Three detectives are handling the case.

Chicago has now recorded more than 1,000 carjackings this year, up 45% compared to last year’s record high. Through August 12, the city had 72 carjackings reported during August alone.
