Old Town man asks people to stop littering, so they shoot at him

It was a simple request. An Old Town man saw someone throw trash from an SUV, and he asked them not to do it. So, of course, they shot at him and crashed into a parked car before speeding from the scene.

Police say it happened at 3:10 a.m. Monday on the 500 block of West Eugenie. A nearby security system captured the car crash and the sound of the gunshot.

A 57-year-old man was walking on Eugenie when he saw the litterbugs toss something from a gray Volkswagen and yelled at them to stop, said CPD spokesperson Kellie Bartoli. Someone yelled back from inside the Volkswagen and shot at him before the driver sped forward, according to Bartoli.

The Volkswagen slammed head-on into a parked car, pushed it into another parked car, then left the scene, a separate CPD report said. The crash report said a man was riding in the Volkswagen, which a woman drove. A license plate that fell from the Volkswagen during the crash indicates the car is owned by a woman who lives in Logan Square.

Area Three detectives are investigating. The victim was not injured.
