3 shot in drive-by near Division Street bar strip; Six shot in local police district since Friday

Update 7:32 p.m. — The man who was critically injured in this shooting has died, per the medical examiner’s office. Demetrius Reed, 27, was pronounced at 12:56 p.m., the office said.

Three people were shot near the Division Street bar strip overnight, not far from where two people were shot in an apparent gunfight between cars on Saturday afternoon.

A man and woman were sitting in a parked car outside a Walgreens on the 1200 block of North Dearborn when they were shot at 3:35 a.m., possibly by someone who fired from a gray vehicle, according to police and witnesses. One of the bullets also struck a man who was standing nearby.

Investigators found about 30 shell casings at the crime scene, just steps from The Original Mother’s and other Division Street bars.

The 27-year-old man in the car suffered a gunshot wound to his head and was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. The woman sitting with him, age 29, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition with a gunshot wound to her foot and several graze wounds to her leg. Police said the man outside the car, age 23, was taken to Northwestern in good condition with a gunshot wound to his foot.

CPD did not release any information about the shooter, but said the older man has a history of contact with police.

Since Friday morning, six people have been shot in three separate incidents in the Near North (18th) Police District:

  • A 23-year-old man was shot in the leg when someone fired shots from an SUV at the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Cambridge Avenue around 1:15 a.m. People who live nearby said the intersection has been the scene of repeated drive-by shootings in recent weeks, but Friday’s victim was the first person to be hit by gunfire.
  • Two people were shot Saturday afternoon when a gunman in a car opened fire on the occupants of another vehicle as they traveled west on Division Street from Orleans around 1:30 p.m. The intended target, a 32-year-old man, suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and torso and crashed outside the 18th District station. Police said a one-year-old boy who was in his car suffered cuts to the foot from broken glass. A 28-year-old woman who was not an intended target was shot in her right arm as she rode in another car along the shooting scene. Police found shell casings stretched along a half-mile of Division Street. Cops found a loaded handgun on the driver’s floorboard of the male victim’s car, according to a CPD report.

So far this year, 51 people have been shot in the Near North Side community area. That’s up from 37 during the same period last year and 25 during the same time in 2019, according to records maintained by CWBChicago.
