Boy, 16, critically wounded in Lakeview shooting

A 16-year-old boy was critically wounded in a shooting near Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Lakeview early Saturday, police said.

The boy was on the 2900 block of North Halsted when someone shot him in the back around 3:20 a.m., according to police.

CPD dispatch records indicate that multiple 911 callers reported hearing shots fired in the immediate area of the shooting minutes before the boy walked into Masonic for treatment. Officers found broken glass on Halsted about a half-block south of the hospital.

Additional details about who the shooter may have been are not available, police said. The victim does not have a history of contact with CPD.

He is the sixth person shot in Lakeview this year. There were six people shot in the neighborhood during 2020, including a woman who was accidentally shot by a CTA security guard. The guard also accidentally shot himself. Last year’s total also includes one man fatally shot by police after he shot a man and then opened fire on pursuing officers.

Five people were shot in Lakeview during all of 2019, according to city records.
