Woman carjacked in Old Town

A 32-year-old woman was carjacked as she stepped out of her SUV in Old Town on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The woman told police she was exiting her black Lexus NX on the 1400 block of North Wells around 2:30 p.m. when a man bumped into her and took away her car keys, CPD spokesperson Kellie Bartoli said.

She then saw two other men getting into her SUV, and one of them tried to hit her, but the punch missed.

All three offenders fled with the woman’s car, Bartoli said.

Chicago police recorded 171 carjackings between November 1 and 25, the most recent dates for which data is available. That’s down slightly from the near-record pace of 180 cases during the same dates last year.

It may be hard to believe, but there were only 45 carjackings in Chicago during those dates in 2019.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
