Death of woman found shot in car Friday night was a homicide, medical examiner rules

A 42-year-old woman who died after being discovered in an SUV with a gunshot wound on Friday night is a homicide victim, the Cook County medical examiner’s office announced.

Fire department personnel responded to a 911 call on the 3300 block of West Cuyler in Albany Park around 11:22 p.m. They found Azucena Vargas in the driver’s seat of her vehicle with a gunshot wound to her head, according to CPD and the medical examiner. Vargas lived on the same block.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police initially classified the case as a death investigation. That may change now that the medical examiner has ruled her death a homicide.

Authorities have not released any other information about the case, including how Vargas was discovered.
