Armed carjackers target victim on Wacker Drive, police say

A group of armed hijackers took a man’s car in the Loop on Wednesday night. It happened on Wacker Drive, directly across the river from Trump Tower.

Police said a 23-year-old man was inside his parked black Dodge Charger when three carjackers emerged from a tan Acura SUV on the first block of East Wacker around 11:50 p.m. All three hijackers displayed guns and ordered the man out of his car. He complied. The group drove away with his car, followed by the Acura.

Police did not release descriptions of the suspects. According to initial information from the scene, the hijackers’ weapons were described as large handguns or smaller rifles.

Over the weekend, two carjackers armed with similarly-described weapons robbed and carjacked a couple in North Center.

Through March 9 this year, CPD recorded 342 hijackings citywide, down slightly from 369 cases during the same period last year. There were 160 hijackings during the period in 2020 and 90 in 2019, according to the city’s publicly-released data.
