Man shot in South Loop apartment building; narcotics recovered at scene, source says

A suspect is in custody after a man was shot inside a South Loop apartment building on Monday afternoon, police said.

It happened on the first floor of a high-rise on the 1200 block of South Michigan around 2:56 p.m., according to police and witnesses. CPD issued a media statement that said the gunman confronted the victim, age 52, and shot him in the leg.

A source said police recovered narcotics at the shooting scene.

EMS took the victim to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to his leg. A witness, identified as his brother, was taken to Northwestern with an injured hand that he reportedly suffered in a fight with the gunman.

Police said the offender was in custody, and officers recovered his firearm. He was taken to Stroger Hospital for injuries he received in an apparent beating, according to a CPD report.

It was unclear if the shooting unfolded before, during, or after the physical altercation.
