4 shot on River North street corner; 2 more reported shot in Gold Coast; Woman shot on Near North Side

Four people were shot on a River North street corner early Sunday and another woman was shot on the Near North Side less than 30 minutes later. As we were preparing this story, two more people were reported shot in the Gold Coast.

The River North shooting occurred across the street from where two people were shot on June 27. It’s also the same block where two men were savagely beaten in an attack captured on Chicago police POD video last summer.

Here’s what we know so far.

In River North, a gunman shot four people outside Snickers Bar, 448 North State, around 1:11 a.m., according to Chicago police and video from the scene. According to witnesses, the victims were near a white Kia Fit that was facing south on State Street when someone opened fire from the vehicle, which fled toward the Loop.

Illinois State Police found the Kia unoccupied less than an hour later near its registered owner’s home in the Oakland neighborhood.

According to police, a 29-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his cheek, jaw, and chest. EMS took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Also taken to Northwestern was a 41-year-old woman who suffered gunshot wounds to both legs and a 40-year-old man who was shot in his leg and knee. They were listed in good and fair condition, respectively, police said. A 27-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to his foot.

Police detained a man near the shooting scene, but the reason for the arrest is not clear.

The shooting occurred across the street from where two people were shot on June 27. It’s also the same block where two men were savagely beaten in an attack that was captured on video last summer. On June 23, a man was shot during a robbery attempt kitty-corner from today’s shooting scene.

Less than 30 minutes after the shooting, around 1:34 a.m., a 24-year-old woman was shot while standing next to her car on the 600 block of West Scott. She went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in a car and was listed in good condition with a graze wound to the back of her neck.

Police officers said they found about 30 shell casings inside Stanton Park, but a CPD statement said the woman was “unable to provide further details of the incident.”

Then, at 4:26 a.m., police responded to calls of shots fired and found a man shot in an alley on the side of 52 West Elm in the Gold Coast. The second shooting victim sought help from officers who were stationed on the nearby Division Street bar strip. Officers said they found dozens of shell casings of different calibers in the area.

Police said two men, ages 37 and 39, suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to Northwestern. The younger man is in serious condition and the older man is in fair condition, according to CPD.

So far this year, 20 people have been shot in the River North neighborhood, up from eight at this point last year and four as of July 10, 2020. The Near North community area, which includes River North, has seen 45 shooting victims so far this year, up from 18 at this point last year and 17 during the period in 2020.
