Armed robbers shoot man in Loop parking garage; woman pistol-whipped and carjacked nearby

Update July 12, 2022, 12:50 p.m. — CPD has just released a community alert confirming that both crimes were committed by the same hijacking crew. According to the alert, the group consists of three to five Black males in their 20s wearing hooded sweatshirts and ski masks.

A man was shot during an armed robbery attempt in his Loop parking garage this morning, just minutes after carjackers pistol-whipped and carjacked a woman outside her Loop residence about four blocks away, according to Chicago police.

The shootout occurred inside the residential parking garage for 1135 South Delano Court. | Google

The shooting occurred as a 42-year-old man was pulling his $150,000 sports car into the Roosevelt Collection Lofts parking garage, 1135 South Delano Court. Police said five men stepped out of two cars that followed the victim to the garage, and they all pulled guns to rob him around 3:38 a.m.

But the victim is a concealed carry holder, and he engaged the crew in a shootout, according to a CPD statement. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg and a graze wound to his head. The robbers did not take his car. EMS took the victim to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.

A black Jeep Cherokee and a Chevy Trax were seen following the victim to the garage on surveillance video. The offenders all concealed their faces with hoodies and masks.

According to units at the scene, at least 17 shell casings were found on the third level of the garage, which is accessed via Wells Street.

About three minutes before the shooting, a 48-year-old woman was pistol-whipped and carjacked by three men who exited a black Jeep in the 700 block of South Wells, four blocks north of the Roosevelt Collection garage entrance.

Police said the woman was talking with a friend when the robbers confronted her and one hit her in the back of her head with a firearm. They took property from the woman and her friend, then drove away with the victim’s Chrysler 300, a CPD media release said.

As of Monday morning, 22 people have been shot in the Loop community area this year. There were 14 shooting victims at this point last year, seven as of this date in 2020, and four for the entire year of 2019.
