An armed security guard shot and killed a man who attacked him with an axe outside a Greektown cannabis dispensary on Monday morning, Chicago police said. The guard is recovering.

At 10:05 a.m., officers responded to a silent alarm at Zenleaf Dispensary West Loop, 222 South Halsted. When they arrived, the guard had a cut on his left leg, and the alleged offender, age 37, was unresponsive on the ground.

Police said the offender swung an axe at the guard, striking him in the leg. The guard struggled with the man and fired shots, killing him, according to a CPD media statement.

EMS took the guard to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition. The alleged offender, who is 36 or 37 years old, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 10:31 a.m.

Investigators recovered an axe and a firearm on the sidewalk.  Brad Pittsburgh tweeted an overhead view of the crime scene:

According to court records, the alleged attacker had a warrant out for his arrest for armed assault. He also faced criminal charges for unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated assault with a handgun, and resisting police.
