Two men carjacked a driver who was sitting in his vehicle outside a Loop hotel overnight, then sped away from Chicago cops who tried to pull them over near Chinatown, according to Chicago police records.
The victim, 38, was sitting inside his Nissan Altima in the 100 block of West Monroe when two men walked up and displayed a handgun around 3:15 a.m., a CPD spokesperson said.
Both offenders forced the victim out of his car and then drove away from the scene. He was not injured.
A Chicago police sergeant spotted the stolen car in traffic near Clark and 15th Street a few minutes after the crime. Officers tried to pull the car over, but it struck a CPD tactical unit vehicle while turning onto Cermak Road from Clark Street.
Another police unit crashed into the back of the first patrol car when the driver slammed on her brakes following the collision, according to a police crash report. No injuries were reported.
A sergeant terminated police efforts to stop the carjackers after the collision.
The suspects were described as two Black males wearing black clothing and masks. An officer said they were last seen heading onto the southbound Dan Ryan Expressway from Chinatown.
