A 34-year-old man was shot while sitting in a car near the Lathrop Homes in North Center on Saturday night, Chicago police said.

Police said he was in his car in the 2800 block of North Leavitt when two men walked up and began shooting around 11:35 p.m. He is the second person shot on the block this year.

The gunmen ran away from the scene. Some witnesses said they fled the area in a pickup truck, but police did not confirm that in CPD’s media statement.

EMS took the victim to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg. Police said he was in fair condition.

Four people have been shot in North Center this year, including a 36-year-old man who was shot in almost the same spot as the latest victim on July 23. He told police he hit two parked cars while driving and that someone started shooting at him when he got out to inspect the damage, according to a CPD spokesperson.

A man was shot and killed on the same block on July 11, 2020. Saalik Berberena is charged with that murder, and he remains in jail awaiting trial.
