Update: According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, Leticia Zaragoza’s death has been ruled a homicide, while Josephy Fry died by suicide.
Chicago police are investigating after two people were found dead in a South Loop apartment on Monday afternoon. The local alderman said the case is “a domestic incident. Murder/Suicide.”
In a media statement, CPD said a 36-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were found with gunshot wounds to their heads in the 2000 block of South Indiana. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified them as Joseph Fry and Leticia Zaragoza, both of whom were listed as living in the apartment.
Police said the couple was shot sometime between 2 p.m. Sunday and 3 p.m. Monday. A relative of the woman went to the apartment to check on her well-being because she was not answering the phone. An officer at the scene said the relative found the apartment door unlocked.
Investigators found five shell casings and a gun at the scene.
Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd) tweeted that the deaths were a murder-suicide, but neither the police nor the medical examiner has publicly confirmed that. The medical examiner has scheduled autopsies for Tuesday.
“Tragic,” Dowell wrote. “You never know what is happening behind closed doors.”
