Chicago — Shocking dashcam video shows Illinois State Police troopers being flung to the pavement as they tried to arrest an SUV full of suspected carjackers in Chicago on Tuesday evening.

Police officers surrounded the hijacked BMW when it got stuck in traffic near 47th Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway around 5:15 p.m.

Video from a police dashcam shows troopers trying to break the BMW’s windows to access the occupants. One trooper is seen straddling the car’s hood. Watch:

A trooper successfully breaks the driver’s side window, and he reaches into the car.

However, the driver abruptly speeds away, cutting into an open traffic lane. As the trooper on the hood is thrown over the top of the car to the pavement, the trooper next to the driver’s door is dragged for a short distance. According to preliminary information from the scene, both officers will be OK.

Another driver caught footage of the incident from in front of the BMW:

Police found the BMW abandoned in the 4100 block of South Federal about 10 minutes later. They detained one person in the area who is believed to have been a passenger in the BMW.

So far, the driver remains at large.
