River North shooting leaves man critically injured, suspect in custody

CHICAGO — A man is in critical condition after being shot in River North on Saturday evening, Chicago police said, adding that a suspect is in custody after he crashed his car shortly after the shooting.

The victim, 27, was near a sidewalk in the 300 block of West Erie when the gunman walked up around 6:36 p.m. The offender pulled out a gun and fired shots, one of which struck the victim in the head, according to CPD.

He arrived at Stroger Hospital in a car minutes later.

Meanwhile, the gunman fled the scene in a Jeep that crashed into another car near Ashland and Van Buren. Officers stopped the Jeep and took him into custody.

The victim is the eighth person shot in River North this year. That compares to 12 at this time last year, seven in 2021, and two in 2020.

For the wider Near North Side community area, Saturday’s victim is the 12th person shot, including one man who accidentally shot himself. The area had 32 shooting victims as of this time last year, including nine in a single incident outside the Chicago Red Line station.

There were 14 shooting victims as of this date in 2021, eight in 2020, and 15 in 2019.
