CHICAGO — A botched carjacking attempt that ended with the victim being shot in Bucktown on Monday morning was caught on camera. Chicago police said the victim was in good condition. They have not announced any arrests.
It happened just after 5 a.m. in the 1700 block of North Damen, usually one of the busiest streets in the neighborhood.
The footage, shared at the end of this story, shows the carjackers turning onto Damen as the victim stands on the passenger side of his car, which is parked on the opposite side of the street.
The carjackers pass the victim, pull a U-turn, and roll up behind the victim’s car. Two men jump out of the vehicle and confront the man.
He moves around the front of his car as the two men, each displaying a firearm, wrestle with him.
At least one carjacker fires his weapon as they reach the driver’s side door.
The victim, 52, collapses in a traffic lane on Damen Avenue as the offenders return to the white car. It drives around the man’s body and speeds away. Investigators suspected that the getaway car had been reported stolen on Friday.
Officers found three shell casings at the scene. Police said the man suffered two gunshot wounds to his back.
Robberies in the local police district are up 16% over last year and up 55% compared to 2019, according to CPD’s latest CompStat report.
