CHICAGO — Five people were injured in a shootout near the Willye B. White Park fieldhouse in Rogers Park on Friday night, according to Chicago police. So far this year, 12 people have been shot on the same block, including one earlier this week.

Another man was shot early Saturday morning about three blocks from the mass shooting scene.

Last night, Chicago police surveillance camera officers were watching a group of people in the 1600 block of West Howard when the shooting occurred around 11:40 p.m. They immediately dispatched patrol units to the scene.

CPD said a group of people were “waiting on the sidewalk” when two vehicles pulled up, and an argument started. Gunmen inside both cars opened fire on the group, and someone in the crowd fired back, according to a CPD media statement.

Police were looking for a Tesla Model Y, a black Chrysler 300, and a black SUV that sped from the scene. But no arrests have been announced.

A 37-year-old man was shot in the left arm; a 29-year-old man was shot in the right hip; a 29-year-old woman was shot in the left leg; and a 26-year-old woman was shot in the right forearm and leg, according to CPD. Three were taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston by ambulance. The fourth arrived at St. Francis in a car. The fifth victim, a 29-year-old man, declined medical attention for a graze wound to his head.

Police said another man was shot in the 1900 block of West Howard around 1:19 a.m. Saturday. He told police he was near a Popeye’s restaurant parking lot when he heard gunfire and realized he had been shot in the left foot. The 35-year-old took himself to St. Francis for treatment. Officers said they found close to 30 shell casings in the restaurant lot.

Twelve people have been shot on the 1600 block of West Howard this year, including one earlier this week. Three shooting incidents, including last night, occurred within or immediately adjacent to Willye B. White Park.

Video from last night’s scene, streamed by Chicago Crime Chasers on Facebook, showed officers standing near shell casings outside the park fieldhouse.

A 33-year-old man was shot in a drive-by while standing near the park’s fieldhouse in Rogers Park on June 9.

On May 22, a 19-year-old woman was shot in the chest and abdomen while walking in the park around 10:18 p.m. The victim, a Northwestern University student, was walking with a companion when the shots were fired, Ald. Maria Hadden (49th) said. They were not the intended targets, according to Hadden.

Other people shot on the 1600 block of Howard this year include:

  • A 43-year-old man shot near the Howard CTA station on Wednesday.
  • Three people shot near the Howard CTA station at 12:50 a.m. on June 25.
  • A 31-year-old man shot in a drive-by on February 13.

Another man was shot on the block late last year. The 48-year-old was standing outside when a gunman walked up and fired shots, striking him in the foot, according to CPD. Initial indications from the scene were that the victim knew the gunman.

No arrests have been announced in any of the shootings.
