CHICAGO — A man was shot during a carjacking attempt in Bucktown on Monday evening, Chicago police said. Two more armed robberies were reported nearby immediately after the shooting, and cops think all three cases are related.
Of the four people shot in Wicker Park and Bucktown this year, three were shot during robberies or carjackings.
The 46-year-old victim was sitting in his truck in the 2000 block of North Hoyne when two hijackers walked up around 8:35 p.m. They demanded control of the truck, and one of them shot the victim when he refused to cooperate, police said. The men fled in a silver SUV.
EMS took the victim to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition with a gunshot wound to his left leg.
On a potentially positive note, police found a phone at the shooting scene that may have been dropped by one of the robbers. Of course, given their propensity to commit robberies, the phone may not belong to them.
Another armed robbery was reported a few blocks away about ten minutes later near Palmer and Western. A man told police that three offenders robbed him at gunpoint and fled in a gray or silver Hyundai with a broken rear side window.
The robbers were described as a Black male wearing a mask and a red hoodie and a Black male wearing black clothing.
At about the same time, three armed men robbed a man as he walked with his wife and newborn child on Le Moyne near Hoyne in Wicker Park. He reported that about three men armed with laser-equipped firearms took his wallet.
The carjacking victim is the fourth person shot in Bucktown and Wicker Park this year and the third to be targeted by armed robbers.
On July 14, armed robbers entered Bucktown Food & Liquor, 1950 North Milwaukee, and ordered everyone to surrender their wallets. The men shot a store employee during the holdup.
On June 19, a man was shot while standing next to his vehicle in the 1700 block of North Damen. That crime was caught on video.
The disturbing footage, shared at the end of this story, shows the carjackers turning onto Damen as the victim stands on the passenger side of his car, which is parked on the opposite side of the street.
The carjackers pass the victim, pull a U-turn, and roll up behind the victim’s car. Two men jump out of the vehicle and confront the man. He moves around the front of his car as the two men, each displaying a firearm, wrestle with him.
At least one carjacker fires his weapon as they reach the driver’s side door.
The victim, 52, collapses in a traffic lane on Damen Avenue as the offenders return to the white car. It drives around the man’s body and speeds away. Investigators suspected that the getaway car had been reported stolen before the shooting.
