Two-car robbery team struck at least 14 times on Thursday. And one was caught on video

CHICAGO — Video recorded by a home surveillance system shows two armed robbers mugging and physically attacking a man on Chicago’s Northwest Side on Thursday afternoon.

The robbery was part of a daytime armed robbery spree that involved two carloads of gunmen who targeted victims from West Town to Irving Park. No arrests were made.

The robberies, committed by men who traveled in a white sedan and a gray SUV with heavy rear-end damage, began around 12:20 p.m. in West Town and ended shortly before 2 p.m. At times, a Chicago police surveillance camera operator radioed, the vehicles were seen “caravanning” as they traveled the city streets.

Police reports reviewed by CWBChicago show that each mugging involved two or three young Black males wearing ski masks who emerged from one of the vehicles to target people on the street.

Robberies were reported in:

  • The 1900 block of West Race (white car)
  • The 2100 block of North Western (white car)
  • The 1600 block of North Oakley (white car)
  • The 2600 block of North Fairfield (white car)
  • The 4000 block of West School (white car and gray SUV)
  • The 2100 block of North Kedzie (white car and gray SUV)
  • The 4300 block of West Wrightwood (white car)
  • The 4100 block of West Oakdale (gray SUV)
  • The 3000 Block of North Pulaski (gray SUV)
  • The 2900 block of North Milwaukee (white car)
  • The 2600 block of North Narragansett (white car)
  • The 4900 block of West Wabansia (white car)
  • Again on the 4900 block of West Wabansia (white car)
  • The 1600 block of North Pulaski (white car)

In the video, first posted to Twitter by the Chicago Critter account, two robbers are seen getting out of the gray SUV to rob a man as he walks down the street.

It happened in the 4100 block of West Oakdale around 1:30 p.m.

The footage shows he realized what was about to happen, but he could not get away quickly enough. At least one of the robbers appeared to display a firearm as they ran toward the man.

Both robbers closed in on the victim and went through his pockets. One of them punched the man, seemingly without provocation. Another punch is thrown, knocking the man to the ground. He stays there.

As the SUV pulls away, you can see the rear end is heavily damaged.

No arrests have been made.

Similar robbery sprees have been happening, usually at night, for months. Here is some of our more recent reporting about the problem:
