Man fatally shot in South Loop is 3rd person shot on the block this year

CHICAGO — A man was shot and killed while sitting in an SUV in the South Loop on Saturday night, Chicago police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as 32-year-old Corey Ivy.

Police responded to calls of a person shot around 9:16 p.m. in the first block of West Cermak. They found Ivy unresponsive in the driver’s seat of his 2021 Dodge Durango with gunshot wounds to his chest.

He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital a short time later, police said.

Several shell casings were found inside and directly outside the vehicle. The police did not offer a description of the gunman or provide any other details about what happened.

Ivy is the third person shot and the second person murdered on the first block of West Cermak this year.

On July 8, a Chicago Fire Department ambulance crew reported that they saw a 28-year-old man get shot and killed as they were traveling down the block. Once again, the police offered no information about motives or suspect descriptions. Investigators said they found about a dozen shell casings and a firearm ammunition magazine at the scene.

On July 16, a 31-year-old man was shot and critically wounded during a fight on the block. Responding officers repeatedly called for backup at the chaotic scene. Witnesses caught up with the suspected gunman and “kinda stomped him.”

A suspect was detained, but no charges were ever announced.

Other shootings have been reported near the intersection of Cermak Road and State Street in the past year.

Two people, including an off-duty Cook County correctional officer, were shot outside a nightclub in the first block of East Cermak in February. Police said a gunman fired at them from a pickup truck on the opposite side of Cermak Road early in the morning, hitting them and nearby businesses’ windows.

Last September, two men were killed in a shooting outside Windy City Ribs & Whiskey in the first block of East Cermak. Prosecutors have charged a man named Andre Nelson in connection with that shooting. Officials said Nelson killed two men with a single bullet.
