7 years for sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman he saw walking on the Magnificent Mile

CHICAGO — In the summer of 2021, prosecutors said Anthony Brown followed a highly intoxicated woman down the Magnificent Mile and then guided her to Lower Michigan Avenue, where he sexually assaulted her as she lay unconscious.

A Chicago police sergeant interrupted the assault, pulled Brown off of the woman, and took him into custody.

Yesterday, Judge Jennifer Coleman sentenced Brown to 7 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of kidnapping by secret confinement and criminal sexual abuse.

Prosecutors said the 20-year-old victim had been at North Avenue Beach earlier that August evening. After that, she went to Tavern on Rush with her boyfriend, then left after having drinks and getting into an argument with him, officials said at the time.

Brown encountered the woman as she walked down Michigan Avenue. She couldn’t remember exactly where they crossed paths, but Chicago police video showed him putting his arm around her as they walked south at Ohio Street.

The woman, swaying from the effects of alcohol, almost walked into the window of a building as Brown continuously tried to hold on to her, prosecutors said, citing various video recordings. Around 1 a.m., he led her down a staircase to Lower Michigan Avenue at Wacker Drive.

When they got to the lower level, Brown wrapped his arms around her waist and tried to drag her toward a nearby Jeep, prosecutors said. They fell, and the woman became trapped. A passing motorist stopped to make sure she was OK. She said she was, and she began running toward the Jeep. The passerby left the scene.

The Jeep’s owner happened to arrive a short time later. She called 911 after seeing Brown lying face down on top of the woman, who appeared to be unconscious, according to prosecutors.

A CPD sergeant arrived to find the victim lying unresponsive on her back. Her pants and underwear were down, as were Brown’s, officials said. Brown was thrusting his pelvis near the woman’s private area, the sergeant recalled, and he pulled Brown off the woman.

“I’m just trying to get some p**sy,” Brown said as the sergeant lifted him off the victim, according to prosecutors.

“The officer awakened the woman, who only provided “nonsensical” answers to his questions, prosecutors said. She later told investigators that she did not feel like she had been sexually penetrated, prosecutors said.

Brown has been in the Cook County jail since the attack.

Prosecutors had charged him with multiple Class X criminal sexual assault charges and Class X aggravated kidnapping with infliction of harm. The reduced kidnapping charge he pleaded guilty to is a Class 2 offense, while the sexual abuse count is Class 4, the state’s lowest-level felony grade.
