Armed robbers fire shots, take security guard’s gun in Wicker Park

CHICAGO — A group of armed men fired shots at an armed security guard during a robbery in Wicker Park on Sunday morning, according to a law enforcement source. No injuries were reported, but the robbers got away with the guard’s firearm, according to the source.

A Chicago police spokesperson confirmed that a 47-year-old man was exiting his car in the 1400 block of North Damen when the robbers pulled up next to him in a dark vehicle around 5:50 a.m.

Eight men got out of the dark-colored car and demanded the victim’s property as well as his car, the spokesperson said, adding that at least one member of the group pulled out a gun and fired shots at the victim.

The spokesperson was unable to confirm what was taken from the victim or his occupation. They did say that, for some reason, the robbers were unable to take the victim’s car.

A source familiar with the case said the victim works as a security guard at a nearby building. The robbers took his firearm, some ammunition magazines, and his phone. They also fired at least five shots during the holdup, according to the source.
