At least 25 shots fired at Bucktown intersection, leaving man hospitalized

CHICAGO — At least 25 rounds were fired at a Bucktown intersection Sunday morning, leaving a 57-year-old man injured.

Chicago police released few details about the case. In a brief media release, the department said the victim was standing outside in the 2000 block of West Shakespeare when a bullet struck him in the left side. He is in good condition, according to CPD.

Officers were in the area at the time of the shooting. One of the officers reported over the radio that there were gunshots close to a traffic crash at Damen and Shakespeare. The officer said a tow truck fled the scene.

Investigators located at least 25 rifle round shell casings at the scene. Bullets struck two nearby businesses and some parked cars, but no other injuries were reported.

The traffic crash, which preceded the shooting, occurred when the front axle snapped on a Mitsubishi Eclipse and its driver slammed into a parked car on Damen Avenue, according to a CPD report.

The victim is the second person shot in the Bucktown and Wicker Park neighborhoods this year, a number consistent with other recent years. This year’s other shooting occurred in the 1500 block of North Milwaukee on March 2. That victim did not cooperate with the police investigation.
