Cops hunt gunmen in brazen daytime murder as internet sleuths take the case viral

Surveillance images released by Chicago police show two suspects in the murder of Bernardo Romero (Chicago Police Department)

Chicago police are looking for two men who carried out a brazen daytime murder in Irving Park on Sunday afternoon. The slaying, which appeared to be targeted, is gaining exposure online as internet detectives circulate a woman’s social media post referencing people who might want to harm the victim and providing an address where he could be found.

Bernardo Romero, 25, was killed on the front porch of a home in the 4200 block of North Kimball around 1:21 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day, officials said. In a brief media statement issued that afternoon, CPD said two men walked up and opened fire on Romero, who suffered five gunshot wounds.

He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died about two hours later.

Now, Area Five detectives have released surveillance images of the two gunmen and the car they traveled in.

One gunman, wearing gloves, a partial face mask, and a White Sox baseball hat, is shown peering around the corner of a brick wall. In another image, he is seen running with a pistol.

The other suspect was wearing sunglasses, gloves, a partial face mask, and a long-sleeve top with patches or logos on at least one arm.

While CPD’s initial press release said the murderers fled in a white SUV, the updated bulletin from Area Five says the men traveled in a silver car, possibly a 2019 or 2020 Hyundai Elantra.

Meanwhile, some people have become obsessed with a social media post from a woman claiming to be the mother of Romero’s child.

“My [baby daddy]  got the weakest [enemies],” the post began. “He just keep coming home alive and untouched. Ain’t he snitch on half of y’all? Ain’t he ‘rob’ half of y’all? Anyways, he is not located in 4250 N Kimball. I repeat he is not.”

Romero, according to the Area Five bulletin, was murdered at 4246 North Kimball. Officials have not publicly confirmed any connection between the woman’s posts and Romero’s death.

Area Five detectives can be reached at 312-746-6614. The case number is JH-191231.
