Cops warn of armed group that is robbing and carjacking victims across Chicago

CHICAGO — A group of armed men is responsible for committing at least seven robberies and carjackings across the city since Memorial Day, according to Chicago police. Victims are being targeted as they exit their vehicles during late night and overnight hours, according to a CPD community alert.

Police said cars were taken from two victims, and the men “forcibly accompanied” one victim into the victim’s home. They took property from the residence.

The most recent crimes occurred in Uptown early on June 4:

  • Three armed men confronted a 62-year-old in the 900 block of West Sunnyside at 2:08 a.m., according to police. The crew displayed guns and demanded his property. After he complied, they pushed him to the ground and ran east on Sunnyside, according to the police spokesperson.
  • A few minutes later, a 41-year-old man was robbed in the 1300 block of West Winona. He told police he was walking when three men walked up, and two displayed guns, a CPD spokesperson said. The unarmed robber took the victim’s property, and the crew fled in a white SUV.

Two more robberies were reported within minutes of each other in the 1700 block of West Nelson on May 31. First, two men robbed a male victim, taking his keys and other property at gunpoint around 11:31 p.m. That victim saw the robbers mug a woman moments later on the same block.

CPD also linked a car theft to the group. The alert said the vehicle was taken from the 1400 block of West Irving Park Road on May 28 or 29.

The crew is responsible for three more armed robberies, too, police said:

  • in the 1600 block of North Cicero at 11:46 p.m. on May 28
  • in the 3100 block of South Giles at 1:21 a.m. on June 1
  • in the 5000 block of West Harrison at 1 a.m. on June 2

Police said the robberies have been committed by up to four Black men wearing dark clothing and ski masks.
