Saturday morning crime spree: Robbery victim shot in Logan Square, carjackings reported in Bucktown and Albany Park

CHICAGO — Police are investigating a string of robberies and carjackings reported early Saturday morning in Bucktown, Logan Square, and the Northwest Side of the city. A victim was shot during one of the holdups.

The first carjacking occurred around 3:26 a.m. in the 4300 block of North Sacramento. A Chicago police spokesperson said a 59-year-old man was unloading his car when three men approached him with handguns. One of the robbers pistol-whipped the victim twice as the man handed over his valuables, police said.

The crew escaped with the man’s Mopar Edition Dodge Challenger Scat Pack, which was followed by accomplices in a Kia Soul. Police found the Kia abandoned a short time later near Richmond and Cullom, the spokesperson said. It had also been reported stolen, and its steering wheel had been stripped.

Around 3:43 a.m., a group of robbers shot a man as they robbed him and a woman in the 3600 block of West Cortland in Logan Square. The 40-year-old man and 51-year-old woman were on the sidewalk when two robbers confronted them with a gun and demanded their property, according to CPD.

After taking the woman’s valuables, one of the robbers fired a shot, striking the male victim in the knee. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

Another carjacking occurred in Bucktown around 3:46 a.m. The police spokesperson said six or seven men approached a man and woman who were sitting in a car in the 2300 block of West Shakespeare. One of the robbers displayed a gun and forced the victims out of their 2019 Honda Accord, which the hijackers subsequently stole.

Additional robberies occurred between 4:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. in the 2800 block of North Lowell, the 4800 block of West Dakin, the intersection of Sacramento and Ohio, the intersection of Damen and Iowa, and the 2100 block of West Haddon.

Robbery reports citywide are up 2% this year, building on a long-time high set in 2023. As of last Monday, CPD recorded 3,926 robberies. During the same period in 2020, the city had 3,076 cases.
