Uber driver is shot during carjacking on West Side; 3 people shot during robberies since Thursday

CHICAGO — An Uber driver was shot during a carjacking on the West Side yesterday evening, according to Chicago police. He is at least the third robbery victim to be shot in the city since Thursday night. (Update: A fourth robbery victim was shot on Sunday afternoon. A fifth was shot on Monday morning.)

The 49-year-old was arriving to pick up a passenger in the 200 block of North Latrobe when the hijacker slid into the back seat of his Toyota Camry around 9:01 p.m., according to a CPD media statement. Police said the carjacker ordered the driver out of the car, and even though the victim complied with his commands, the offender shot him in the knee.

The victim walked around the area looking for help, which he eventually received from a passing motorist. EMS transported the victim to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition.

CPD officers used ShotSpotter data to locate the crime scene, where several shell casings littered the street.

Another robbery victim was shot in Logan Square around 3:43 a.m. Saturday. Police said a group of robbers shot a 40-year-old man as they robbed him and a 51-year-old woman in the 3600 block of West Cortland in Logan Square. After taking the woman’s valuables, one of the robbers fired a shot, striking the male victim in the knee. He was taken to Stroger Hospital and is in good condition.

Yet another robbery victim was shot Thursday night on the Far North Side. A 24-year-old man and his 28-year-old girlfriend were walking in the 7200 block of North Ridge when the robber confronted them around 9:04 p.m. Chicago police said the male victim tried to get ahold of the offender’s firearm, but it discharged, striking him in the hand. After getting wallets from the two victims, the robber fled.

The police did not release descriptions of any of the shooting suspects. However, officers who spoke with the victims on Thursday described the gunman as a heavy-set Hispanic man who stood about 5’8 tall. He wore a face mask and may have a tattoo of a lion or tiger on his left forearm.
