Burglars stole safe from highly-regarded Logan Square restaurant during nighttime crime spree

CHICAGO — The owners and staff at Lula Cafe made headlines last month for a grand achievement: Their restaurant was the only Chicago establishment to win a coveted James Beard Award this year. Unfortunately, about three weeks later, the Logan Square hot spot experienced something far more common among Chicago restaurants: a burglary crew broke in and stole their safe.

Chicago police say the same burglars also broke into three other businesses that morning. Now, CPD is hoping that publicizing a clip from Lula Cafe’s surveillance video will help them identify the people responsible. Take a look:

According to CPD, the burglars entered Lula Cafe by breaking the glass with a tire iron around 4:41 a.m. on June 30. In addition to the cafe at 2537 North Kedzie, the group broke into a Boost Mobile in the 2600 block of West Division around 4:53 a.m. They also hit a business in the 2400 block of West Division at 3:08 a.m., as well as another in the 3100 block of West Armitage at 4:47 a.m.

They used the tire iron to break glass at each location and stole safes, electronics, and cash. CPD said the burglars are four Black males between 16 and 25 years old who escaped in a black Infiniti sedan.
