CHICAGO — A woman was shot and critically injured by a home invader in Rogers Park on Sunday morning, Chicago police said.
The 50-year-old was with her husband in their home in the 7700 block of North Marshfield when an “unknown male made entry inside” around 8:48 a.m., according to a CPD statement. The intruder began shooting, striking the woman multiple times, including in the torso, an officer at the scene said.
The gunman ran from the building after the shooting, but where he went after that is unknown.
According to police dispatch recordings, the victim’s husband called 911 and reported that a man kicked in their door and shot her. The dispatch of his call occurred at 8:34 a.m., suggesting the time provided by CPD may be a little off.
Rogers Park has seen 31 shootings so far this year. That’s exactly the same number shot last year and in 2022, too. One of last year’s shootings was self-inflicted. Officials determined that four of the shootings in 2022 were acts of self-defense. In 2021, the neighborhood saw 24 shootings.
A home invader shot and killed a Wisconsin man last year after forcing his way into an apartment in the 7600 block of North Sheridan, less than a half-mile Sunday’s shooting.
Quentin Pruett of Madison, Wisconsin, and others were in the living room when the shooter knocked on the back door. He forced his way in and opened fire, striking Pruett multiple times in the face and chest.
Friends of Pruett said they believed the gunman was looking for someone, but he targeted the wrong apartment and killed the wrong man. No charges have ever been filed in the case.
