Man charged with robbing postal worker at gunpoint; ‘Where’s the phones at? You move, I shoot’

David Atwater (Chicago Police Department)

CHICAGO — Prosecutors have charged a man with robbing packages from a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier.

“This is a robbery, don’t move,” David Atwater allegedly warned as he entered the carrier’s work truck. “Where’s the phones at? You move, I shoot.”

Police said the robbery occurred as the postal worker made her rounds in the 11500 block of South May on October 4.

The 24-year-old implied he had a weapon by holding his hand in his pocket and pointing toward the bulge, officials said in court filings. Atwater allegedly took three sealed packages and escaped on a scooter.

Officials said the postal worker recognized Atwater because she had seen him while working her route. She also picked him from a photo lineup, they said.

Judge Susana Ortiz, noting that Atwater was “just off parole” for a felony gun conviction, ordered him detained pending trial. Court records show Atwater received probation for a previous gun case.
