Man beat another driver with metal baseball bat during road rage altercation in Logan Square: prosecutors

Dylan Berrio (Chicago Police Department, Multiplottr)

CHICAGO — A suburban man has been jailed pending trial after prosecutors accused him of beating another driver with a baseball bat during a road rage altercation in Logan Square last month.

The victim, 37, “suffered broken bones, permanent disfigurement, and has to go through ongoing surgery, Judge Ankur Srivastava said in the detention order for 25-year-old Dylan Berrio.

Berrio, of Franklin Park, nearly drove head-on into the victim’s car in the 2600 block of North Milwaukee around 4:30 a.m. on December 19, prosecutors said. He allegedly got out of his car with a metal baseball bat to confront the other driver.

Srivastava’s detention order said Berrio reached into the man’s vehicle and struck him ten times with the bat, conduct that was “so impulsive and violent” that he had to be kept in jail.

While the victim initially declined medical attention, he later sought help and learned that he had suffered a broken nose and shattered cartilage in his nose, which would require surgery and result in permanent disfigurement, officials said.

The victim had enough of a state of mind to call 911 and provide a description of the attacker and his license plate number. Chicago cops learned that the plate came back to a car that Berrio was renting at the time of the attack. Prosecutors said a CPD surveillance camera posted about a block from the incident corroborated the victim’s statements. The victim subsequently identified Berrio in a photo lineup.

He is charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery in a public place.
