A man was fatally shot at a South Side smoke shop on Friday afternoon, but one of his killers ended up being shot, too, police say. Now, police have the injured suspect in custody while his possible accomplice remains on the loose.

It all started as an argument between the victim and two men inside City Smoke, 7050 South Damen, around 4:24 p.m.

The situation escalated when a 38-year-old man pulled out a gun and opened fire on the 42-year-old victim, striking him in the chest, head, and back, according to a Chicago police statement.

Both suspects were gone when police arrived, but cops found the gunman a short time later when they responded to a “person shot” call in the 7100 block of South Bell. They found the 38-year-old there with a gunshot wound to his left hand, according to preliminary information. Exactly who shot the suspect is unclear.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video and confirmed that the man on Bell was involved in the shooting, a source said.

Meanwhile, the second offender fled west on 71st Street. According to an officer who saw the store’s surveillance video, he had braids and was wearing an olive green or camouflage hoodie and blue jeans.
