Chicago police are questioning two people after a man was shot and killed during a confrontation in the West Loop overnight. Initial reports suggest the gunman also accidentally shot one of his own friends.
Officers responded to a call of a person shot around 2:50 a.m. Sunday and found a 38-year-old man lying on the sidewalk in the 200 block of North Halsted Street. Witnesses were performing CPR when officers arrived, but the man was subsequently pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. CPD said he had been shot in the chest.
Police said he was outside when he became involved in a heated exchange with two men inside a gray sedan. The situation escalated, and someone inside the vehicle fired at least one shot.
As officers were rushing to the scene, another 911 caller reported that he had shot the victim after being attacked. The caller reported that one of his bullets accidentally grazed his own friend, who was sitting in the vehicle with him, according to preliminary information.
Police detained the 28-year-old suspected shooter when he brought his injured friend to the University of Illinois Hospital. Officers at the scene said they found three firearms inside the gray Kia that transported the pair, along with a spent shell casing.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name, but online profiles with the same name point to a man who was developing a modeling career and had worked as a DJ.
