Chicago sees 100% spike in weekend violence, driven by Christmas tree lighting chaos

Five people were murdered, and 23 others survived gunshot wounds across Chicago over the just-ended weekend, according to preliminary police reports. That’s a 100% increase over the same weekend last year, according to HeyJackass, a website that tracks Chicago violence using official and open-source data.

The site’s operators note that drawing longer-term comparisons is difficult because the weekend sometimes has extra days due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

This year’s surge was largely driven by Friday night’s chaos in the Loop following the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

Seven people, all juveniles, were shot when a gunman opened fire on State Street near the Chicago Theatre around 9:50 p.m. Less than an hour later, 14-year-old Armani Floyd was killed in another shooting in the 100 block of South Dearborn Street. An 18-year-old man was also injured in that incident. Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrests in either case.

Additionally, an apparently homeless man was found stabbed to death outside a restaurant in the Loop on Sunday morning.

Here is a rundown of the weekend’s incidents based on information provided by CPD.

Editor’s note: HeyJackass data includes shootings that occur on expressways within city limits, which CPD does not count because the Illinois State Police investigates those incidents. For statistical purposes, the site defines “weekend” as noon Friday to 6 a.m. Monday. CPD also uses a narrower window as its definition of “weekend”: 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday. Also, the weekend’s totals may rise or fall slightly as officials investigate incidents and victims succumb to injuries.
