Man found unconscious on NW Side street has died; homicide suspected

A 25-year-old man found bleeding and face-down on a Northwest Side street corner early last week has died, and sources familiar with the investigation say he appears to have been beaten to death.

Alexander Kazanowski, of the 4000 block of West Nelson Street, was found unresponsive at the corner of Belmont and Harding avenues in Avondale at about 3:15 a.m. on March 24 after a passerby noticed blood around his head and called 911, according to sources and Cook County Medical Examiner records.

The Chicago Fire Department transported Kazanowski to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, but he died on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

An autopsy had been ordered, but results were still pending as of Monday.

A source familiar with the case said a preliminary investigation suggests Kazanowski may have gotten into a disagreement at a nearby bar before the other party followed him outside and continued the altercation on the street as Kazanowski walked home. The investigation was ongoing as of Monday, and no arrests had been announced.

Update: The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Kazanowski’s death a homicide due to injuries suffered in an assault.
