Police are searching for a gunman who fired at least 20 rifle rounds, killing a man on the Near North Side overnight.
Chicago police said the 40-year-old victim was standing in the 400 block of West Evergreen Avenue when someone opened fire around 2:10 a.m. Tuesday. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Witnesses reported seeing a black truck or SUV speeding away from the scene. Officers who reviewed surveillance video said they saw a black Chevrolet pickup truck fleeing eastbound from the shooting scene at 2:08 a.m. Responding officers counted about 24 shell casings at the scene that appeared to have been fired from a rifle.
The victim is the seventh person shot on the Near North Side this year. That is significantly lower than the 33 people who had been shot in the area at this point last year. However, 18 of last year’s victims were targeted in a single attack outside a River North lounge that is believed to be the worst mass shooting in Chicago history.
