Chicago recorded 42 shooting victims from Friday through Monday morning, including three people killed and 39 wounded, making it the city’s second-worst shooting weekend of the year, according to HeyJackass, which independently tracks Chicago crime statistics using official and open-source data.
The weekend’s total trails only Father’s Day weekend, when 44 people were shot, for most victims in 2026. Both weekends topped Memorial Day and Independence Day weekends, which are typically among Chicago’s most violent holiday periods, the website found. Longer-term comparisons for the just-ended weekend are difficult because the weekend sometimes includes the three-day Labor Day holiday, which can skew the numbers.
Saturday night’s shootout at a picnic in Washington Park drove much of this weekend’s total. Fifteen people were shot, including one who died, according to CPD. The incident now ranks in a three-way tie for the second-worst mass shooting in Chicago since at least 2013.
Here is a chronological rundown of the other shootings, based on preliminary information released by CPD:
Friday, August 28
6:54 p.m. | 3700 block of West Chicago Avenue
A 26-year-old man was near a commercial business when an unknown vehicle approached and multiple occupants inside fired handguns. He was struck in the abdomen and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
7:55 p.m. | 4500 block of West North Avenue
A 28-year-old man was outside when he heard a loud noise and realized he had been shot in the right shoulder. He told officers he believed the shots came from an apartment above. SWAT responded to ensure the building was safe and cleared the scene without incident. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition.
Saturday, August 29
1:12 a.m. | 3800 block of South Western Avenue
An 18-year-old man was getting out of a vehicle when he heard gunshots and felt pain. He had been shot in the left elbow and initially went to Holy Cross Hospital before being transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition.
1:27 a.m. | 1600 block of South Morgan Street
A 26-year-old man was found outside with a gunshot wound to his left thigh. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition and did not provide officers with details about the shooting.
3:02 a.m. | 2400 block of South Trumbull Avenue
A 17-year-old boy went to Mount Sinai Hospital after being shot in the left foot. He was listed in good condition and did not provide officers with details about the incident.
3:50 a.m. | 1100 block of West Wrightwood Avenue
A 33-year-old woman was riding in a vehicle when she heard gunshots and felt pain. She was shot in the right foot and taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition. No other injuries were reported.
11:20 a.m. | 7100 block of South Jeffery Boulevard
A 23-year-old man went to the University of Chicago Hospital with an unspecified gunshot wound to the body and was listed in good condition. A 73-year-old man was found at the scene with a gunshot wound to the buttocks and was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition.
2:20 p.m. | 2600 block of West 63rd Street
A 53-year-old man was found with gunshot wounds to the chest and arm. He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition.
7:55 p.m. | 700 block of North Ridgway Avenue
A 29-year-old man was near the sidewalk when he was struck by gunfire in the buttocks. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, initially reported in critical condition.
8:33 p.m. | 5200 block of West Augusta Boulevard
A 15-year-old boy was outside when a dark-colored SUV drove past and someone inside opened fire. The boy was shot twice in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.
9:20 p.m. | 1100 block of West 63rd Street
Two men were outside when an unknown vehicle drove past and someone inside opened fire. One man, whose age was not provided, was shot in the back and taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition. A 36-year-old man suffered two gunshot wounds to the right thigh and was also taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition.
10:11 p.m. | 4200 block of West 25th Place
A 22-year-old man was driving when he approached a traffic signal and an unidentified man on foot fired shots at his vehicle. He was shot in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition.
11:23 p.m. | 0-100 block of East 37th Street
Three people were standing outside during a gathering when someone in the crowd pulled out a firearm and fired toward the group. A 23-year-old woman was shot in the right hand and taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition. A 31-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the body and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A 32-year-old man also suffered gunshot wounds to the body and was initially listed in critical condition before being pronounced dead.
11:37 p.m. | 5400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue
Police were at the location to disperse a gathering when someone began firing into the crowd. Fifteen people were shot, including a 35-year-old man who was pronounced dead. The wounded victims included men ages 34, 39, 42, 23 and 35, along with women ages 40, 45, 26, 37, 47, 23, 43, 21 and 44. Most of the surviving victims were transported to area hospitals in good or fair condition, while one 47-year-old woman was listed in serious condition. The conditions and hospital locations for three victims were initially unknown.
Sunday, August 30
12:35 a.m. | 9100 block of South Princeton Avenue
A 20-year-old man was found outside with a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in fair condition and did not provide officers with details about the shooting.
1:31 a.m. | 11600 block of South Aberdeen Street
A 31-year-old man went to Roseland Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was listed in fair condition and did not provide officers with details about the incident.
2:17 a.m. | 1000 block of West 116th Street
Two men went to Roseland Hospital after being shot. A 31-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the face and was listed in good condition. A 33-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was also listed in good condition. Neither provided officers with details about the shooting.
2:15 a.m. | 8000 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue
A 33-year-old man was found outside with a gunshot wound to the buttock. He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition.
3:30 a.m. | 3100 block of South King Drive
A 35-year-old man was approached by an unidentified man with a handgun, who fired and struck him once in the leg. The victim went to the University of Chicago Hospital in fair condition.
7:15 a.m. | 5600 block of South Wolcott Avenue
A 32-year-old man was outside when he heard a loud noise and felt pain. He had been shot once in the leg and went to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
6:47 p.m. | 1900 block of West Ogden Avenue
Police met a 26-year-old man at Stroger Hospital after he went there on his own with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was listed in critical condition. Police said the shooting location was unknown.
7:39 p.m. | 3600 block of North Pine Grove Avenue
A 33-year-old man told officers he was approached by a man who pulled out a firearm and forced him into a residence at gunpoint. The offender then fired, striking the victim in the neck. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition.
7:43 p.m. | 4100 block of West Wilcox Street
A 17-year-old boy was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the legs. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition.
