Chicago suffered a horrific Monday, with at least five murders reported within six hours citywide, nearly matching the number of slayings reported over the entirety of the just-concluded weekend. According to information released by CPD:
At about 3:40 p.m., two school custodians were found fatally shot inside Mark Twain Elementary School, 5134 South Lotus Avenue, on the Southwest Side. CPD said a 48-year-old woman had been shot multiple times and a 63-year-old man had a single gunshot wound. The case is believed to be a murder-suicide. No students were inside the building, and classes had not yet begun for the new school year.
Then, a 48-year-old woman was found fatally stabbed inside a home in Avondale around 5 p.m. Officers responding to the 3900 block of West Wellington Avenue found the woman unresponsive inside the residence with a puncture wound to her chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said a person of interest was taken into custody at the scene and that a weapon was recovered. Charges are pending.
About 90 minutes later, two people were fatally shot while leaving a business near the 200 block of West Pershing Road. CPD said a silver Nissan sedan occupied by three people rolled up on the victims around 6:29 p.m. The offenders pulled out guns, opened fire, then fled eastbound. A 25-year-old man suffered 12 gunshot wounds and a 22-year-old woman suffered six gunshot wounds, police said. Neither survived.
The day’s final fatal shooting occurred around 9:36 p.m. in the 7300 block of South Indiana Avenue, where two people walked up to a 38-year-old man, pulled out guns and opened fire, police said. Another 38-year-old man suffered three graze wounds to the right arm and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in fair condition.
