Convenience store worker shot customer over 47¢ dispute, prosecutors say

Janeiro Jackson (Chicago Police Department)

A convenience store employee was ordered detained after allegedly shooting a customer during an argument over an unpaid balance of about 47 cents.

The shooting happened around 7:26 p.m. October 9 at a convenience store in the 4400 block of West Cortez Street. Prosecutors said Janeiro Jackson, 34, was working at the store when he intervened in a dispute between his manager and a 31-year-old customer over the remaining balance.

The customer shoved Jackson during the confrontation, prosecutors said, and Jackson allegedly responded by firing two shots, striking the man once in the abdomen. The customer’s four children, all younger than 13, witnessed the shooting from outside the store, according to prosecutors. Authorities said there is no surveillance footage of the shooting.

Jackson left the store afterward and called 911, telling the dispatcher that he had fired the shots and still had the gun, prosecutors said. When officers arrived, Jackson allegedly said he had a concealed-carry license and claimed the customer had been the aggressor. Officers recovered a firearm from Jackson’s waistband.

Inside the store, they found the wounded customer lying on the floor near two spent shell casings. Before losing consciousness, the customer identified Jackson as the shooter, prosecutors said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where doctors determined that the bullet was lodged in his spinal column.

During a detention hearing, Judge Ankur Srivastava said there was “no viable self-defense claim,” noting that the customer was unarmed and was not threatening Jackson when he was shot. The judge also said Jackson demonstrated “a lack of impulse control.”

Jackson is charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery by discharging a firearm. He was ordered held pending trial.
