Boystown’s not-so-easy robbery button. |
Another Boystown robbery was foiled early this morning when the victim fought back.
Police say the victim was near Halsted and Buckingham around 4:30 a.m. when a male offender attempted to pull off a strong-arm robbery. The victim had other ideas. Upon facing a good challenge, the would-be robber fled empty-handed.
He is described as male, black, 23- to 28-years-old, 5’9″ tall, 180 to 200 pounds, with a beard and mustache. He wore a black cap, black jacket with a white shirt underneath, and dark jeans.
Officers gave the victim a ride to a nearby hospital for treatment.
This is the second robbery to fail near Halsted and Buckingham due to victim resistance since Sunday morning. In the other case, two offenders attempted to rob or carjack a victim in his garage. That victim realized that the perpetrators’ firearm was actually a BB gun and he fought back, causing the criminals to flee.
CPD case number is HX253012.
“Setting The Tone”
At the police department CAPS meeting for Wrigleyville and Boystown last night, 19th district Commander Elias Voulgaris laid out his plan as we approach robbery and battery season:
“The only way we’re going to stop the bad element — the element coming to cause robberies and stuff — the only way to do that is by setting the tone,” Voulgaris said.
Voulgaris will be sending as many officers as he can to [saturate] targeted locations in the early morning starting in June, he said.
He did not want to say which areas, but he said earlier in the meeting that crimes “absolutely” correlate to areas with more nightlife.
We were happy to hear the commander stand up for good policing practices like justified street stops, too.

Jacob Klepacz Case
Jacob Klepacz |
While police sources still believe that Jacob Klepacz’s case will evolve from “death investigation” to homicide, that has not occurred because the medical examiner’s ruling is still pending.
Klepacz died after suffering severe head injuries in a beating and apparent robbery.
“Justice For Jacob K” has collected 1,335 Facebook likes and 66 Twitter followers since Tuesday night. Family and friends will distribute flyers Saturday in Wrigleyville and near the place he was found in Lincoln Park.
