Gunman Carjacks Uber Driver In Lakeview Monday Evening

A Chicago police officer examines the abandoned vehicle near Belmont and Lake Shore Drive.

An Uber and Lyft driver was carjacked at gunpoint near the intersection of Sheridan and Pine Grove Monday evening. Police found the woman’s vehicle abandoned in traffic near Belmont and Lake Shore Drive minutes later. No one was hurt.

Crime scene tape wraps the vehicle.

Several witnesses reported seeing a man jump out of a vehicle and forcibly take the victim’s black Honda around 8:30PM. Both cars sped off, leaving the 35-year-old woman standing in the middle of the street, police said.

Less than five minutes later, officers found the car sitting in a southbound lane of Inner Lake Shore Drive, just north of Belmont Avenue. Incredibly, the victim’s purse was still inside of the car.

The gunman is described as a 6-foot-tall black man in his mid-20’s who wore a black jacket and a black hat.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
