Robbery offender tried to take cop’s gun, police say

A 29-year-old man with the word “Renegade” tattooed to his forehead faces felony charges after he tried to take a cop’s gun as the officer arrested him near Belmont and Sheffield early Saturday, police said. The incident unfolded almost exactly 24 hours after a double-shooting took place near the same intersection.

Brown (Chicago Police Department)

Lamar Brown is charged with attempted robbery, attempt to disarm a peace officer, resisting arrest, and two counts of aggravated battery.

Patrol officers were flagged down near the 900 block of W. Belmont just after 3AM yesterday by a witness who saw a fight unfolding on a nearby street.

When cops tried to arrest Brown for punching a woman in the face, he fought back and tried to take one of the officer’s holstered handguns, police said.

The cops were able to defeat Brown’s attempt and place him into custody, but one officer was injured during the struggle, prosecutors said.

Another man approached police after Brown was secured to report that Brown punched him and tried to steal his watch before officers arrived. A woman who tried to stop the robbery attempt was also punched by Brown, the man said.

The injured officer was treated and released at Illinois Masonic Medical Center. None of the other victims sought medical attention.
