Sydney Hassell entered the TCF Bank inside of Jewel-Osco at 3561 North Broadway around 10 a.m. and gave the teller a note: “This is a robbery. Don’t make any sudden movements, just give me all the money in the drawer,” according to a federal complaint.

Hassell escaped with $560 in cash that included a GPS tracking device and a small number of bills with pre-recorded serial numbers, an FBI agent said in the complaint.

Cops quickly caught up with a black Hyundai being driven by Hassell outside of the Mariano’s store at 3030 North Broadway. The car was pulled over, and the driver was identified by the bank teller as the man who passed the note.

Magistrate Judge Michael T. Mason ordered Hassell held without bail.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
